Caesarea Philipi built by Herod the great, upon his death passed on to his son Philip who made it his capital and named it Caesarea Philipi.
In this cave begining from the 3th centurey Bc there was cult for god Pan "the present name today Banias in Arabic which is corruption of Paneas.
A temple of white marble was built here 19 BC by Herod the great who dedicated to his patron the Emperor Augustus.
The Banias River one of the main sources for the Jordan River.
